Egon Zehnder: private equity's AI leadership is splitting into portfolio value creation and fund-level investing roles
An Egon Zehnder report, covered by Hunt Scanlon Media, argues that AI leadership in private equity is becoming two separate jobs. One is a portfolio-side value creation role measured by EBITDA; the other is a fund-level role that reworks sourcing, diligence, IC preparation and portfolio monitoring and is measured by decision quality. Large alternative managers are building AI as a shared platform capability, while middle-market firms often start with an advisor or an AI operating partner.
Gives PE firms a framework for deciding whether their next AI hire should improve portfolio companies or the firm's own investment process.
